Activated charcoal is a traditional remedy for treating excess stomach and intestinal wind. Medicinal charcoal is purified to eliminate the harmful substances found in non-medicinal grades of charcoal. The charcoal is heated to a high temperature which alters the structure providing it with a honeycomb formation that has a large surface area, resulting in activated charcoal.
When the charcoal is ingested, it binds the excessive wind in the stomach and bowels to the surface of itself. As the charcoal is not absorbed by or digested in the gut, it is excreted with the bound gas in the stools. Thereby relieving discomfort caused by excess wind (flatulence).
